Smoky quartz has a mohs hardness of 7. It is colored black, gray or brown mainly by aluminum built into it’s molecular structure, but it also has a small amount of lithium. These elements are transparent, but exposure to millions of years of gamma radiation brings out the color zones.
When the color is very dark to opaque, it is called morion. Sometimes clear quartz has aluminum and lithium present inside, and through artificial irradiation it will become smoky quartz. Usually when this happens though, the color becomes very dark.
Ruled by Earth energy, smoky quartz acts on the Root Chakra to facilitate grounding. This crystal aids in developing skills of discrimination regarding what to allow to affect you and take a stand for, and what to let slide. It helps you make wise decisions, to know more clearly what you want and what you don’t want. It helps you respond in the best way to people and situations in order to better accomplish your goals.
Smoky quartz is a calming, comforting and soothing stone of protection. It draws out negativity and transforms it into positivity. Smoky quartz helps the physical body connect with the soul’s higher energy, silencing mental chaos and bringing clarity.
Use smoky quartz in combination with hematite for better understanding of personal matters. Smoky quartz combines well with amethyst to help facilitate transformation and to create a balanced foundation to receive energies of your higher chakras.
